What’s the number one cancer killer of both men and women? Here are a few hints:
You guessed it – it’s lung cancer. |
|
|
It’s true. According to the American Cancer Society, the problem is that “symptoms of lung cancer often do not appear until the disease is advanced, only about 15% of the lung cancer cases are found in the early stages before the cancer
has spread to
nearby lymph nodes or elsewhere.”
Research has been underway across the nation to determine screening methods for lung cancer and the effectiveness of suggested screenings. At The University Hospital Barrett Cancer Center, we are now accepting patients for our own study – “Spiral CT of the Chest for Early Lung Cancer Detection.” This study aims to determine if a spiral CT scan (often called a “cat” scan) of the chest can identify lung cancers at early stages, before they have spread beyond the lung. We are currently seeking subjects who are at least fifty years of age with a 20-pack year smoking history. A 20-pack year smoking history means that the person has smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years. If you think you may be a candidate for this study or if you would like more information about our ongoing work at The University Hospital Barrett Cancer Center, please call 513-584-3183 or send an e-mail message to ucthoracic@uc.edu. This study is a joint effort of The University Hospital Barrett Cancer Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Departments of Surgery and Radiology. |
