Psychiatric Services
The University Hospital offers specialized psychiatric services to adults who are experiencing emotional or behavioral problems, stress, loss and/or other difficult issues. Services and programs include inpatient psychiatric services, Mobile Crisis Team, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) and consult services.

The inpatient psychiatric services include four general adult inpatient units, including a psychobiology research unit. On the research unit, consenting patients may have an opportunity to participate in studies of psychiatric medications that may help to treat their illness.

The University Hospital also offers services for psychiatric emergencies for individuals in crisis, including individuals experiencing suicidal or homicidal feelings. Psychiatric Emergency Services provides service to approximately 1,000 patients per month, making it one of the busiest in the country. A Mobile Crisis Team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide emergency mental health interventions in the community to adults experiencing psychiatric symptoms.

Todd Grogan - RN,BC, BSN is the clinical director of psychiatry services for the Health Alliance at The University Hospital. Todd has worked in the field of psychiatric nursing for more than 11 years. In his career he has worked in many areas of mental health, including child and family, adult and the geriatric population. Todd received his diploma in nursing from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. He is board certified in psychiatric/mental health nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. He received his bachelor of science in nursing from The University of Cincinnati and is currently working on a master’s degree in organization leadership from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University.

Jan Toler - RN, BSN is clinical manager of inpatient psychiatry at University. Jan has worked in psychiatry for 16 years with experience in, adolescents through the Mercy System, MR/DD adults and children in Cuyahoga County in Cleveland. She worked at University Hospital in the 1980s as a LPN and as a RN staff nurse on inpatient psychiatry unit. Received an AD nursing degree at Cincinnati State and BSN at University of Cincinnati. She is considering an MBA from the University of Cincinnati.

Robert Sperry – BSN is clinical manager of PES for the Health Alliance at The University Hospital. Robert graduated from Wright State University with a BSN in 1993. He was a staff nurse at Dartmouth Behavioral Health System, which is a youth treatment center specializing in sex offenders from 1993-1994. In 1994 he became RN supervisor for the Dayton Mental Health Center in Forensic. He received his MSN from the University of Cincinnati in Family Health/Psych Nurse Practitioners program in 2002. At The University Hospital, Robert was a staff nurse on inpatient and psychiatric emergency services (PES).

Andrew Winters - LISW is the social work manager for Psychiatric Emergency Services, inpatient psychiatry, behavior management specialists, and chemical dependency specialist. He earned his bachelors degree from The University of Georgia and completed his masters work at The University of Cincinnati earning a certificate in Specialized Mental Health. He worked in Georgia, Tennessee, and Ohio in outpatient mental health for more than 9 years and has been with University Hospital since 2002

Janie M. Mynatt - MSSW, LISW is the social work manager for the Mobile Crisis Team and for the Center for Emergency Care Social Work at University Hospital. She earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Northern Kentucky University and graduate degree in social work administration from Kent School of Social Work, University of Louisville. Ms. Mynatt joined the University Hospital in February of 2000. She had worked several years in Northern Kentucky at a social service agency serving the homeless population and was chair of the Northern Kentucky Housing and Homeless Coalition. Ms. Mynatt has worked in both psychiatric and medical social work.
