After Treatment

Skin cancers can recur in the same place or in other parts of the body. Patients should also examine their skin monthly, keeping in mind the "ABCD" guidelines, and follow their doctor's advice for how to reduce their chances of getting skin cancer again.

Melanoma patients are at greater risk of getting the disease again if their cancer was thick or had spread to nearby tissue. These patients may require close follow-up care, including X-rays, blood tests, and scans of the chest, liver, bones and brain.

Caring for Skin Cancer Patients

People who have been treated for skin cancer should receive regular checkups with their physician.
