Clinical Externship Details

THE HEALTH ALLIANCE CLINICAL EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Starts May 19, 2008 or June 23, 2008

Duration is 8weeks

You’ve successfully mastered the skills and gained the knowledge to make you a valuable addition to the Nursing profession. Now, the Health Alliance invites you to take on a new challenge…become a Clinical Extern during the summer prior to your final year.

As an extern, you will get a realistic look into the exciting area of nursing, while working hand-in-hand with our experienced team of clinical preceptors. The externship will also give you the opportunity to practice some clinical skills, sharpen your nursing judgment, and organize care for many diverse patients.

PROGRAM GOAL:

To assist the nursing student to function within the profession, gain confidence, knowledge, and to experience the realistic view of health care delivered in the hospital setting.

 


2008 INFORMATION

Nursing is a practice discipline that requires a balance of theoretical knowledge and application of the knowledge. The Health Alliance has an excellent clinical externship program that will enhance the skills that you have learned in nursing school. The goal of the program is to assist the nursing student to function within the profession, gain confidence, knowledge and to experience the realistic view of healthcare delivered in the hospital setting.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of all but final year in an accredited Nursing program.
  • Provide a transcript of grades showing a required G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
  • Provide satisfactory references from 2 clinical instructors.
  • Provide a written statement of why the applicant would benefit from the Externship.
  • Interview with Nurse Recruitment
  • Available for 8 weeks
  • Provide own housing

 

Clinical Externs are considered associates of The Health Alliance and receive a regular salary. Although they share responsibilities with other registered nurses, they are not part of the regular staff. Each Extern works under the direct supervision of an experienced clinical preceptor.

 

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Student must submit completed application starting in January, 2007.

  • Student must submit completed application on-line starting in January 2008.
  • Student must include most recent transcripts, including Fall 2007.
  • Student must include a letter of personal introduction, explaining experiences and professional goals.
  • Student must include two letters of reference, from clinical faculty members.
  • Student must include a complete checklist of skills and competencies signed by the clinical instructor from the student’s school.
  • When completed packet is received, a formal interview will be scheduled by a recruiter from Human Resources.
  • Applicants will then interview with Clinical Managers.

Clinical Externs will be expected to participate in total patient care . As the Extern gains experience, patient care activities are increased so that he/she gains confidence in organizational skills necessary for outstanding delivery of care. The Extern works from his/her knowledge base. The preceptor will compensate any deficit in the patient’s needs and the Extern’s ability.

Program coordinators will contact each student weekly in order to follow progress. Personal conferences between students, coordinators, and preceptors may be requested. Clinical Externs may be assigned to any shift, depending on availability of the suitable preceptors.

 

PROGRAM EVALUATION:

Clinical Externs will be provided feedback. Upon completion of the program, the Externs and preceptors will evaluate aspects and elements of the program.

Finally, the Extern will be asked to evaluate the Program in relation to its stated objective. The evaluation tool may include open-ended questions, which will allow the student to freely express his/her perceptions of the programs.

LIMITATIONS:

The Clinical Extern will not perform venipuncture or administer medication to any patients .
