For families with school-age children, the beginning
of a new school year can be an exciting and stressful time. To help reduce stress, try
taking the following steps before the first day of school. Take care of doctor, dentist and eye
appointments. Children should also receive their immunization shots before they
begin kindergarten. Among the vaccinations that children should have are: Tetanus,
Hepatitis and Polio. Children should also have a Tuberculosis test. Consult a doctor to
find out what immunizations your child should receive. Take time to review safety rules. If the school is within walking distance, plan to use a family code word when family acquaintances are picking up children. Make sure children know their address and phone number and how to dial 911. Children who are home alone should know what to say on the phone; they should also know a neighbor's phone number should they need help. The emergency departments of the Health Alliance want children to
have a safe and fun school year. By taking time to plan before the school year begins,
parents and children can do their best to ensure that the year is a success. If you have questions on how to have a safe and relaxing vacation
this summer, the Health Alliance can provide answers. Call us at 1-888-640-CARE The Health Alliance Emergency Departments, which include The Christ Hospital, The University Hospital, The St. Luke
