Precautions to Take

People with allergies should camp in an area that will not cause skin or eye irritations or some other type of reaction. Always remember to bring along medications that provide allergy relief.

When camping, it is important to be aware of the environment around you. Avoid plants such as poison ivy and poison oak. A good rule to follow is, “Leaves of three, let it be.” (Poison ivy and poison oak grow mainly in damp areas and dense undergrowth.)

Remember that while you’re visiting the campsite there are other creatures that make the area their home. Animals are not attracted to humans, but are attracted to the many scents that come from a campsite. If something smells pleasant to an animal, it will usually search for it.

Keep Animals from Visiting

Before choosing a campsite, consult with a park ranger to find out if any dangerous animals may be in the area. And, remember the following:

*  Clean up after meals.
*  Wash all dishes immediately after eating.
*  Make sure trash is properly disposed of in a container away from the campsite.
*  Store items such as deodorant, toothpaste and soap outside the tent.

Campfires also require a great deal of caution, especially in a heavily wooded area. To keep a fire from getting out of control, build it away from overhanging branches, keep a bucket of water and a shovel nearby, circle the fire pit with rocks, and never leave a fire unattended.

The Health Alliance Emergency Departments, which include The Christ Hospital, The University Hospital, The St. Luke Hospitals (East and West), The Jewish Hospital and The Fort Hamilton Hospital, wish you a safe holiday season and a prosperous and healthy 2000.
