Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution

When the New Year arrives, many of us make resolutions to exercise more and work off those extra pounds gained during the holiday season.

When the New Year arrives, many of us make resolutions to exercise more and work off those extra pounds gained during the holiday season. However, maintaining a regular exercise program can be very difficult. "I’m too tired," "I don’t have enough time," or "I’m not seeing results" are some common reasons why people have trouble exercising on a regular basis.

Although staying motivated to exercise can be challenging, it is certainly not impossible. Below are some tips that can help you stick with your exercise program, resulting in a healthier, happier you.

  • Set Realistic Goals

Obtaining thin thighs in 30 days probably is not feasible. Instead, set short-term goals, such as adding a half mile to your run or walk in two months.

  • Devise a Schedule

Figure out what the best time of the day is for you to exercise. Try to work out on the same days at the same time. This will help you feel that exercise is a scheduled activity, not an option.

  • Always Have a "Plan B"

If you exercise outdoors, have an alternate plan during times of bad weather. For example, take an aerobics class or go to a gym.

  • Make Your Workouts Fun

You are more likely to continue exercising if it is an activity you enjoy. Don’t pick an activity because it is popular. Instead, select one that fits your interests and personality. If you get bored with an activity, try a new exercise or skill to make your workout more exciting and educational.

  • Exercise With a Friend

Friends who exercise together help keep each other motivated. It is also fun to try new activities with another person.

  • Reward Yourself

Reward yourself every time you complete a workout or meet a specific goal. For example, pay yourself a dollar each day you exercise, and treat yourself to a piece of clothing at the end of the month. Wanting to save your money can become an incentive to continue working out.

  • Be Patient

Don’t’ expect to see results immediately. Give it time. You will see results if you follow a consistent exercise program and a proper, well-planned diet.

The Health Alliance hospitals routinely host many types of support groups and classes; check back often, as new events are being planned now.
