Developed by DePuy Orthopaedics, the system has been proven to be nearly as reliable as knee and hip replacements over a 15-year test period. It offers patients more stability and more mobility--with less pain than other options. "Previous total ankle replacement systems lacked the long-term stability needed to justify the surgery," said Dr. G. James Sammarco, Center for Orthopaedic Care. "However, this device has been tested for many years and has earned an FDA approval. It is the only ankle replacement device on the market today." Dr. Sammarco, who began using the new ankle replacements about seven months ago, is one of only 200 orthopedic surgeons in the country chosen by DePuy to use the new device. Surgeons are chosen based on their experience in foot and ankle surgery. Most are fellowship trained in the field of foot and ankle surgery. Once selected, surgeons must undergo a special training program before being authorized to implement the Agility System. An ankle replacement may be necessary in cases of bone fractures, osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative arthritis), traumatic arthritis (caused by previous bone damage) or rheumatoid arthritis. In the past, fusion of the ankle bones was chosen over replacement because replacement was not reliable. When fused, ankle pain was reduced but the ankle was basically immobilized, making even walking a chore. "The Agility System has met the test of time that others have not," said Dr. Sammarco. "Now patients with severely damaged ankles have a reliable and comfortable option that reduces pain without eliminating mobility." In addition to Dr. Sammarco, two other local orthopedic surgeons have been selected and trained to perform ankle replacements with the Agility System: Nicholas Gates, M.D., The St. Luke Hospitals and V. James Sammarco, M.D., The Christ Hospital, Dr. Sammarcos son and new partner. If you suspect you may have a stress fracture, discuss the problem with your physician.
