Women vs. Men Do The
Differences Between Women and Men Go Beyond Just Body Shape? |
| As women, we have always known that we are
different than men, but now there is health information based on new research that
supports the differences. |
Osteoporosis affects more women than men, and after menopause, the loss to bone mass in
the hip is 33% more rapid in women than men.
Headaches occur more
frequently in women than men; the prevalence in women is 15-17 percent versus 3-6 percent
in men.
Often women experience
different symptoms of a heart attack than men. The crushing pain associated with pain
radiating down the left arm may be felt in women, but often women complain of more vague
symptoms, including fatigue, upset stomach, or "just not feeling well. (The
female heart is two thirds the size of the male heart and has smaller coronary arteries. )
Drugs are metabolized
differently in women...often slower, resulting in a different affect than men. This may
mean that women need smaller doses than men
Our immune system is
different than a man's. Women are far more likely to suffer the following autoimmune
disorders: lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple
sclerosis.
Because of these differences, many of which are relatively new
concepts for the medical field, doctors are beginning to medically treat men and women
differently in accordance with their diversities.
It is important to talk with your physician or nurse midwife about
these differences/ You want to create a good relationship with your health care provider
to make sure you are treated individually.
If you are in need of a health care provider please see Find A
Physician on this website or call 1-888-749-DRDR.
We are different in more ways than how we think and how we
look--refreshing and challenging at the same time!
