Comp Costs
It comes as no surprise to occupational health professionals that these annual costs exceed the comparable costs for the care of AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease, and even rivals the costs for heart disease and cancer.

workers comp for injuries on the job The news media recently gave prominence to a report in a medical journal ranking the cost of occupational illness, injuries, and deaths in the U.S. The article, which appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine in July 1997, calculated the direct and indirect costs of occupational health problems in 1992.

It comes as no surprise to occupational health professionals that these annual costs exceed the comparable costs for the care of AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease, and even rivals the costs for heart disease and cancer. The authors stressed that the calculations were conservative and that costs were likely even higher. By their estimates, there were 6500 job related deaths from injury, 13.2 million non fatal injuries, 60,300 deaths from disease, and 862,200 occupational illnesses occurring annually in the American work force. The total costs were estimated at $171 billion per year.
