Michael Hanaway, MD, assistant professor of surgery, has been named the new director of pancreas transplantation of the Department of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Hanaway received his transplant training at the University of Wisconsin, one of the leading pancreas transplant centers in the world. One of the areas Dr. Hanaway will focus on is development of the solitary pancreas transplant procedure, particularly in type1 diabetic patients that have already received a living donor kidney transplant. This is currently one of the largest areas for growth in pancreas transplantation. Dr Hanaway will also be involved in helping determine which type 1 diabetic patients are best suited for either islet or pancreas
transplantation.
Dr. Hanaway will also be working collaboratively with Ram Peddi, MD, associate professor of medicine and medical director of pancreas transplantation and Rita Alloway, PharmD, research professor and director of transplant clinical research, in developing new immunosuppressive regimens for pancreas transplantation. Dr Hanaway will also work with E. Steve Woodle, MD, professor of surgery and director of the Division of Transplantation, in translating new steroid-free immunosuppressive regimens developed in the renal transplant program to pancreas transplant recipients.
