Cincinnati--Edward Y. Zavala, transplant administrator for the Health Alliance, has been named chairman of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Transplant Administrators Committee. Zavala is the past vice-chair of this committee and has served as the UNOS Region 10 (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan) representative for the past three years. He has been active in moving key issues forward to improve transplant administrative and business processes, patient access to transplantation and organ donation. Zavala's goals for the Transplant Administrators Committee will focus on transplant economic studies, transplant clinical outcomes and pharmacoeconomics.

Elliot Cohen, senior vice president of The University Hospital, said, "Ed is well deserving of this position as he has been instrumental in the continuing success of our transplant programs. I'm confident that the expertise and leadership Ed brings to the Committee will be beneficial to all involved."

Zavala has served as the Health Alliance's transplant administrator since 1996, coming to Cincinnati from the University of California San Diego Center for Transplantation, where he served as administrative director. In his position with the Health Alliance, he provides administrative oversight for the liver, kidney, pancreas, islet and heart transplantation programs at The University Hospital and the kidney transplantation program at The Christ Hospital. Zavala earned his bachelor's degree in biology from San Diego State University and his MBA from the University of Phoenix. Zavala is also an assistant professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy.

The Health Alliance is an integrated health care delivery system that includes The Christ Hospital, The University Hospital, The St. Luke Hospitals, The Jewish Hospital, The Fort Hamilton Hospital and the physicians of Alliance Primary Care.
