In nominating Dr. Shutter, Raj Narayan, MD, Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, described her as "the most compassionate and empathetic physician whom I have ever had the pleasure of working with." Dr. Narayan praised Dr. Shutter for working long hours and for always taking time to talk to families whose loved one was hospitalized - often with a severe injury - in the neuroscience intensive care unit. "This is not glamorous work," Dr. Narayan wrote. "However, Dr. Shutter patiently does what needs to be done with compassion and empathy. Beyond all the hype that surrounds medicine these days, this is what our profession was meant to be."
