Jewish Hospital Cholesterol and Metabolism Center Researchers Published in Fertility and Sterility, Leading Obstetrics Journal

Cincinnati - Researchers at The Jewish Hospital Cholesterol and Metabolism Center and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center were recently published in Fertility and Sterility, a leading obstetrics journal, on their findings that trans fatty acid intake during pregnancy can significantly increase risk of fetal loss.

The authors of the published works were Jewish Hospital Cholesterol and Metabolism Center researchers Charles Glueck, M.D. and Ping Wang, Ph.D., and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center researcher John Morrison, Ph.D.

"Trans fatty acids have adverse biological effects well beyond their relationship to heart attack and stroke, such as promoting fetal loss," said Dr. Glueck, medical director, Jewish Hospital Cholesterol and Metabolism Center. "Women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy should reduce, or even better, avoid, trans fatty acids to decrease risk of miscarriage."

Use of trans fat has been widely publicized recently because of its ban in New York City restaurants.
