Cincinnati - When a person is dying in a hospital, the focus of care is often on the comfort of the patient. Most individuals prefer to die at home so Jewish Hospital provides patients who are dying with a home-like environment that is soothing and encourages peace and reflection. A comfort cart is also provided to these patients and their families.

The comfort cart, which resembles a nightstand, includes a small table lamp, a CD player with a selection of soothing tapes, sacred scripture, soft tissues, snacks, teas, coffee, and calming lotion. A popular item also found on the cart is a homemade quilt or knitted cover for the patient. The quilt brings warmth, color and comfort to the room.

"Families often tell us how much they appreciate the comfort cart and the environment it brings," said Cathy Beumer, R.N., 6 South, Jewish Hospital. "They also say that the quilt serves as a reminder of their loved one's final moments."

A local volunteer group originally donated the quilts; however, more quilts are needed to continue bringing this comfort to Jewish Hospital patients. Individuals or groups interested in knitting, sewing or donating supplies may contact the Volunteer Office at 513-686-5330.

The Jewish Hospital is an acute care hospital located in Cincinnati's northeast suburbs. It was established in 1850 as the first Jewish hospital in the United States and is part of the Health Alliance, an integrated health care delivery system.
