West Chester -- West Chester Medical Center has named Sheldon Brownstein, MD, FACC, FACP, FHRS, medical director of electrophysiology (EP) services.

Brownstein currently practices at Comprehensive Cardiology Consultants, Inc., in Cincinnati, and is the medical director of the EP lab at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Kentucky. He was previously a clinical assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

"We are excited to welcome Dr. Brownstein to our cardiology program. He is an expert in the field of electrophysiology," says Cyndi Traficant, director of perioperative services. "Under his direction as medical director of EP services, WCMC will be able to offer the latest in this area of clinical care. The electrophysiology lab is a valuable tool for evaluating the heart's electrical processes and diagnosing arrhythmias - or heart rhythm disorders. This will be a valuable service for the residents in the region."

After earning his medical degree from the University of Rome School of Medicine, Rome, Italy, Dr. Brownstein went on to an internship in internal medicine at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Darby, Penn., and an internal medicine residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. He also earned a fellowship in cardiovascular disease from the University of Illinois, Chicago, and a fellowship in clinical electrophysiology from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

Dr. Brownstein is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the Heart Rhythm Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Heart Association Council of Clinical Cardiology. He is a member of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the American Society of Internal Medicine. He is also a member of the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati.

Dr. Brownstein is a certified acute cardiac life support (ACLS) instructor. He has been published extensively in medical journals and books, and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Electrophysiology.
