Northern Kentucky - The St. Luke Hospitals are raising awareness for National Colorectal Cancer Month in March by offering free screening test kits and information to Greater Cincinnati residents. Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum, and it is estimated that there will be approximately 148,000 new cases and 55,000 deaths in 2006. It is the second leading cause leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States for men and women, second only to lung cancer. Risk factors for colorectal cancer include personal or family history of colorectal polyps or inflammatory bowel disease - ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease; the use of tobacco or alcohol to excess; obesity; a sedentary lifestyle; or personal or family history of colorectal cancer. Dean Adams, M.D., colorectal surgeon, The St. Luke Hospitals, recommends the following to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer: · Begin having regular colorectal screening tests at age 50 or age 45 for African Americans. · Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. · Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. · Consume alcohol in moderation. To receive a free screening kit or more information about colorectal cancer, please call 859-572-3791. The St. Luke Hospitals are part of the Health Alliance, an integrated health care delivery system that also includes The Christ Hospital, The University Hospital, The Jewish Hospital, The Fort Hamilton Hospital and the physicians of Alliance Primary Care.
