The Commission of Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted approval to the cancer program at The St. Luke Hospitals. The St. Luke Hospitals have received this approval consecutively since 1986. The hospital received commendations in many areas, including prevention and early detection and cancer-related improvements and was also acknowledged for outstanding supportive services. Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1932, the approvals program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to make sure they conform to those standards. Only one in four cancer programs at hospitals across the United States receive this special approval. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years. Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved hospital ensures that a patient will have access to quality care close to home; comprehensive care offering state-of-the-art services and equipment; a multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients; information about cancer clinical trials, education, and support; lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results; and ongoing monitoring and improvement of care. The St. Luke Hospitals continue to merge the latest technology with a holistic approach to cancer treatment. This includes emotional, spiritual and social support for cancer patients and their families in addition to the most advanced medical treatment for cancer. The St. Luke Hospitals are part of the Health Alliance, an integrated health care delivery system that also includes The Christ Hospital, The University Hospital, The Jewish Hospital, The Fort Hamilton Hospital and the physicians of Alliance Primary Care.
