University Hospital Trauma Prevention Program Serves Area High Schools
Cincinnati--Christi Witsken, R.N.,M.S.N., University Hospital injury prevention coordinator, will present "Choices and Chances" in partnership with Hamilton County Safe Communities program to students at Oak Hills High school, 3200 Ebenezer Road on Tuesday, Feb.1, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The injury prevention program focuses on choosing safe driving practices and avoiding activities that can lead to a serious car crash. The program is being offered this year in many school districts and high schools including Northwest, Taylor, Colerain, Sycamore, Elder, LaSalle, Seton, McAuley and Oak Hills.
Traumatic injuries from automobile collisions are the major cause of death in people age 15 to 19. Circumstances surrounding car crashes often involve high-risk behavior and are frequently preventable. This program fulfills a need to promote safe driving behaviors in the teen population.
"We try to make kids aware that unsafe choices they make while driving could cause a terrible crash and result in horrible injuries or death. When the teen driver is paying more attention to his or her cell phone, changing a CD or being otherwise distracted when they are at the wheel, the inattention can often lead to loss of control of the car and a resulting crash," says Witsken. "This program asks the teens to think about consequences just a minute."
The trauma nurses who work at University Hospital, the area's only Level 1 trauma hospital, will bring hospital props to the classrooms such as nasal gastric tubes, breathing tubes and walkers, as well as slides from actual crash scenes, to show the teens how much their lives can change in just seconds. "This is truly an educational program to change or at least influence behaviors," says Witsken. "We try to make an impact."
The University Hospital is a part of the Health Alliance, an integrated health care delivery system that also includes The Christ Hospital, The St. Luke Hospitals, The Jewish Hospital, The Fort Hamilton Hospital and the physicians of Alliance Primary Care.
