The Christ Hospital and The University Hospital have placed eight of their patient care programs among the nation's best in the 2002 U.S. News & World Report annual guide to "America's Best Hospitals." They are the only local adult hospitals named in this year's guide.
The programs at The Christ Hospital ranked in the July 22 U.S. News & World Report include: Geriatrics (34), Gynecology (49), Heart (40), Respiratory (27) and Rheumatology (37). The University Hospital received rankings in the categories of Ear, Nose and Throat (20), Hormonal Disorders (48) and Respiratory (36).
The U.S. News & World Report 2002 "America's Best Hospitals" rankings access care for 17 specialties at hospitals nationwide. To even be considered for this list, a hospital has to be a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals, be affiliated with a medical school or provide at least nine out of 17 specific items of medical technology. In each specialty, a hospital must perform a given number of procedures or had to be cited by at least one physician in the past three years of U.S. News surveys. These hospitals received a score that equally weighs reputation, mortality and a group of care-related factors such as nursing. The July 22 issue of U.S. News & World Report will be available at newsstands on July 15.
