Jack and Karen Cassidy

In recognition of their strong commitment and philanthropic leadership to numerous causes in the Greater Cincinnati community, including Drake Center, Jack and Karen Cassidy have been named recipients of the 2010 Diamond Award. Also being honored are Johan and Susan deRoos, recipients of the 2010 Spirit of Drake Award. Johan, a former Drake patient, and his wife, Susan, have been active advocates of Drake since Johan's stroke in 2006. The Spirit of Drake Award honors an individual or individuals who have shown courage, character, perseverance and vision, and who have served as a source of inspiration for patients and families at Drake Center. Both couples will be honored on May 13 at an event sponsored by the Drake Foundation, "Principled Leadership," featuring former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Just when New Yorkers were beginning to enjoy the city's revitalization under Giuliani's leadership came the unimaginable on 9-11. Giuliani swiftly marshaled his remarkable leadership skills to pull his city, and perhaps the entire nation, through the crisis. In a riveting presentation, Giuliani will share:

  • his principles of leadership based on his best-selling book;
  • how first responders embody the principles of leadership to keep our nation safe;
  • how individuals and business leaders can practice principled leadership to achieve personal excellence and inspire excellence in workplace teams.

Three first responders who were injured in the line of duty and treated at Drake Center will serve as honorary co-chairmen of the event. They include: Former Cincinnati Police Officer Bryce Bezdek; Hamilton Firefighter Chris Gabbard; and Lockland Police Officer Brandon Gehring.

"We are grateful to have recovered as well as we have," said Bryce Bezdek, on behalf of all three co-chairs. "We want to give back to ensure that others injured in the line of duty receive the same care and services to help rebuild their lives," he added.

Event Details: May 13, 6 p.m., Millennium Hotel, 150 W. Fifth St., downtown Cincinnati, $100/person or $1000/table of 10 which includes cocktail hour, dinner and leadership presentation. Invitation only pre-reception with Mr. Giuliani included with sponsorship. For more information, or to register online, visit DrakeCenter.com or call The Drake Foundation at 513-418-5970. All proceeds will benefit patient services and research at Drake Center.

Drake Center is a not-for-profit, long-term acute care hospital, providing both medically complex and rehabilitative care, as well as skilled nursing, assisted living, various outpatient and wellness services, and research. The Drake Foundation, founded in 1997, secures philanthropic support that will enhance Drake's highly specialized services and the care, comfort and quality of life of its patients.
