Our Children Are At Risk

Type II diabetes is a major problem for children growing up without the benefit of a healthy lifestyle.

January 2001

We need to get our children to move more and to eat healthier meals. The number of children with Type II diabetes has increased 60% in the last 5 years!  This Type of diabetes typically develops in adulthood, usually because of years of being overweight.  Now, with the sharp increase in the number of overweight children, we are seeing  more and more Type II diabetes in this age group.

Why the increase?

Experts feel this is the result of much more sedentary lifestyles and many meals at fast food restaurants.  We need to get our children to move more and to eat healthier meals.

One of the best ways to do this is to set a good example as an adult!  Take walks together, shoot hoops in the driveway,  or ride bikes.  Prepare nutritious meals for the family and make an effort to eat together as often as possible.
