Residency in Critical Care

The following outline represents general guidelines for the specialized pharmacy residency in critical care at The University Hospital in Cincinnati. These guidelines will be tailored to the specific individual, depending upon the resident's previous experience, background and needs.Pharmacy Practice Resident with Doctor

I. Clinical Rotations
There will be a maximum of ten months available for rotations (July - orientation; December - ASHP Clinical Midyear Meeting, project, education). The amount of actual orientation time is negotiable based on the resident's past experience. Normally, after a two-week orientation, the resident is placed in a "mini-rotation" in either the MICU or SICU. Residents must spend a minimum of one month in each of the eight required rotations listed below. Four elective rotations can be selected from either the required or elective rotations.

The scheduling process will allow the resident to either "specialize" in a particular area of critical care or receive exposure to a large variety of critical care settings.

Required Rotations

  1. Orientation - July
  2. Project - December
  3. Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  4. Medical Intensive Care Unit
  5. Nutrition Support
  6. Cardiac Care Unit (Medical)
  7. Infectious Disease
  8. Center for Emergency Care

Elective Rotations
The resident will choose 4 rotations from either the required rotations or the following elective rotations:

  1. Renal Transplantation/Renal Service
  2. Infectious Disease (HIV/AIDS)
  3. Drug Information and Drug Use Policy Development
  4. Pain Control Service
  5. Pharmacy Practice Management
  6. Pulmonary Consult Service
  7. Neurology
  8. Neurosurgery
  9. Shriner's Burn Institute (Pediatric Burns)

II. Research Project
The resident will be required to participate in a drug or drug-related research project. This may be in the form of an original scientific investigation or a problem-solving project. The individual components of the project include: formulating a research hypothesis, development and approval of a research protocol, designing a timetable for completion of the project and its components, collection and analysis of data, and interpretation of the study results.

Given the time constraints of a one-year residency, the resident may satisfy the requirement of a research project by participating in a number of pre-existing ongoing projects. The research requirement may also be fulfilled by completion of a project conducted in the area of critical care, such as pharmacy staff development, establishment of drug dosing protocols, etc. The resident is expected to present his/her project at a regional pharmacy meeting, and is highly encouraged to present and/or publish the study results in a national forum.

III. Education and Training

Pharm.D. Students
The resident will participate in the didactic education of Doctor of Pharmacy students at the College of Pharmacy. A minimum of two lectures in the area of critical care will be required.

The resident will also participate in precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students, during rotations in critical care areas when such individuals are scheduled in the same area (minimum: two Doctor of Pharmacy students). The resident will provide presentations on selected topics to Doctor of Pharmacy students on a monthly basis throughout the year. (i.e. sedation/paralysis, hemodynamic monitoring, ARDS, etc.)

Speaking Engagement
The resident will present two continuing education seminars (Pharmacy Grand Rounds) to the Department of Pharmacy Services. The resident will present at least one major presentation to an outside group (e.g. Cincinnati Area Pharmacists' Association, Trauma symposium, Critical Care symposium).

The resident will present the findings of his/her research project to the Department of Pharmacy as well as at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference.

Hospital Committee Activities
The resident will prepare and present a minimum of one drug monograph for evaluation at a Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

The resident will participate in the Critical Care Journal Club for the Department of Pharmacy Services by presenting a minimum of 5 articles during the year. The resident will also participate in the monthly journal review process.
